Well… It got your attention, didn’t it? I guess that’s what the schools thought too. Distracting, possibly, but TOO distracting to be worn to school on a bracelet? I don’t know.
I Love Boobies
What am I talking about? It’s the “I ♥ Boobies” bracelet being worn to support breast cancer awareness. According to CNN this issue cropped up in September, but it’s still being pursued in schools across the country as the bracelets are being worn by more and more students. Administrators claim the bracelet’s language is not appropriate for school, while students say it’s a term they use frequently and it gets an important conversation going. Some students are being suspended or having to attend Saturday school.
I see two sides to the story here. One – I’m quite positive some students are wearing the bracelets to show support for breast cancer awareness. Possible they have had a loved one affected by this disease or they are very in tune with the devastating effects of this disease. Whatever their reason I feel it is valid. Could the students choose a different bracelet that also promotes awareness, but in a less controversial way? Of course – but you have to remember that they’re high school students. Most high school students like the idea of towing the line and this bracelet is certainly doing that. Two – I’m relatively certain (thought they might not admit it) that some students are wearing the bracelets because they are getting so much attention. I’m sure the idea of getting to wear something that says “boobies” to school is funny and entertaining to some of the high school set.
So what to do? How do you weed out the students wearing the bracelets for the “right” reasons and those just wanting the attention garnered by wearing them? Who knows??? It’s one decision I’m glad I don’t have to make – especially considering I have had family members pass away from breast cancer. I might end up supporting the bracelets since it’s calling so much attention to the disease!
